When trading in times of volatility, it is essential that choices are made with clarity and decisiveness.
Sometimes when the market moves against you, the margin requirement on your account will increase and unless more funds are added to your account, we will have no choice but to close some or all of your positions.
At IG Markets, we may try to contact you when your account is on margin call, though we are not legally required to. It is in both parties' interests to ensure accounts have enough funds deposited in them for positions to remain open.
If you do not pay us any shortfall immediately, the Customer Agreement gives us rights against you that you should be aware of. These rights include, but are not limited to, closing your open positions without prior notice to you. We have these rights as soon as you have a margin shortfall – however large or small, so it is important to monitor your positions closely.
The automatic closure under the circumstances mentioned above is there to ensure clients do not make losses greater than they can afford, and IG Markets takes its responsibility of margin management seriously.
